The Moon

The Moon is Earth's only permanent natural satellite, orbiting approximately 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers) away. It's about one-quarter the size of Earth with a diameter of around 2,159 miles (3,474 kilometers). The Moon's surface is marked by impact craters, dark lunar maria (basaltic plains), and bright highlands. It has no atmosphere, no liquid water, and experiences extreme temperature fluctuations due to its lack of atmosphere. The Moon affects Earth's tides and has phases that change over a roughly 29.5-day cycle due to its position relative to the Sun.
