The Flame and Horsehead Nebulas
Located in the Orion constellation, the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) is an emission nebula characterized by its fiery, flame-like appearance. It's illuminated by the bright, hot star Alnitak, one of Orion's Belt stars. The nebula's glow comes from hydrogen gas excited by ultraviolet light from Alnitak, creating a vivid contrast with the surrounding dark dust clouds.
Also in Orion, near the Flame Nebula, The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula notable for its distinctive horse-head shape against the bright emission nebula IC 434. This silhouette is formed by cold, dense clouds of gas and dust that block the light from the stars behind it. The Horsehead is one of the most famous examples of a dark nebula, offering striking visuals contrast in astrophotography.
